The Gumball Diary (Friday April 26)
1530 - The Gaylord Opreyland Hotel
Only the one entry today - when I wasn't driving I was asleep (as
much as you can be on precast interstate with stiffened suspension that
gives you a huge jolt every 25 meters!)
We left Washington at about midnight and started the 678 through
the night haul to the Opreyland Hotel. We managed to loose the
little green Stingray outside the checkpoint - he just vanished, shame
really as we'd had a fun ride down to DC with him.
Just outside DC quite a few people suffered the wrath of the police
including the Aston, the Ducatti boys, countless Porsches and Ferraris,
and at least one of the Lambos.
For us a fairly uneventful ride down, given that radar detectors are
not to allowed in DC and Virginia - rumour has it that if the police
catch with with one they'll make you drive over it! Not what we want
at this stage in the Gumball.
We spent most of the night running with a blue Viper from Texas and
a black Saleen Mustang, and at various stages an old blue Ferrari, a
couple of the Ferraris from Joe Macari's crew and pair of 911s.
A few minor stops during the night, but we called into a Cracker Barrel
for breakfast just outside Knoxville and waited for the sun to come up.
We finally got into the hotel at about 1100, checked in, got
cleaned up, and had a beer, and caught up with everyone else....
One of the yellow Lambo's picked up a $5,000 ticket, but the average
was about 2 or 3 tickets at $200 each (not us - we managed to stay completely
clear, albeit with a couple of close calls!).
Dinner on a paddle steamer and a night out in Nashville to come!!!
